Name: CCSM3/POP Equatorial-Pacific Basin Model Goals: Create a CCSM coupled system where the ocean component is only active in the equatorial region so that the sensitivity of the system to higher/different ocean resolutions can be examined at relatively low cost. Motivation: Determine whether a CCSM ocean component using a different ocean grid resolution than the one currently standard in CCSM3.0 would improve the quality of fully coupled CCSM simulations, especially with respect to equatorial properties and ENSO variability. Authority: Mariana Vertenstein Project Lead: Markus Jochum - scientific lead Brian Kauffman - SE lead Implementation Plan: I) develop a simple equatorial basin model for use with data atm, lnd, and ice models. II) develop a more complex equatorial basin model for use with CAM, CLM and data ice models. Completion Criteria: *) simulations have been run using the model developed in phase I *) simulations have been run using the model developed in phase II *) scientific lead feels the sensitivity to grid resolution has been adequately explored Resources: I II phase --- ---- Brian Kauffman 40 80 hours/phase
