Name:  CCSM3/POP Equatorial-Pacific Basin Model

Goals:
   Create a CCSM coupled system where the ocean component is only active in the
   equatorial region so that the sensitivity of the system to higher/different
   ocean resolutions can be examined at relatively low cost.

Motivation:
   Determine whether a CCSM ocean component using a different ocean grid resolution
   than the one currently standard in CCSM3.0 would improve the quality of fully coupled 
   CCSM simulations, especially with respect to equatorial properties and ENSO variability.

Implementation Plan:
   I)  develop a simple equatorial basin model for use with data atm, lnd, and ice models.
   II) develop a more complex equatorial basin model for use with CAM, CLM and data ice models.

Completion Criteria:
   *) simulations have been run using the model developed in phase I
   *) simulations have been run using the model developed in phase II
   *) scientific lead feels the sensitivity to grid resolution has been adequately explored
